AOC wines with 1-star French cuisine full of imagination
“”Restaurant Aréna”” opened its doors in July 2016 on a corner of Nakasu area just a 4-minute walk from Tenjin-Minami Station. Fate brought Tokyo chef Ryo Arima to Fukuoka where he gained valuable experience in hotels and restaurants throughout the city. After that, he went through two and a half years of training at several French restaurants including world gourmet guide award restaurant “”Passage 53″” and “”Sur Mesure”” in Paris and Burgundy’s world gourmet guide award “”Maison Lameloise”” before returning to Japan to open “”Restaurant Aréna””.

The food is prepared as the chef’s choice (omakase) courses, and the menu showcases only the theme of each plate and the ingredients used. The first thing that guests can salivate at in anticipation is the chef’s signature dish “”Rum Raisin””. This sweet, cutely presented, desert-like hors d’oeuvre consists of French foie gras, rum raisin sauce, and an almond-based crust. It is an exquisite finger food and a great companion to a glass of champagne. After that, guests can look forward to a cavalcade of rich and innovative dishes arranged from a mix of seasonal ingredients to fit into the theme the chef has chosen. For example, the theme of one day’s main dish might be “”Arpeggio.”” It’s a musical term for a type of broken chord. This earthy ensemble featured ingredients like oysters, Charolais beef from France, small turnips, herbs, and other ingredients with varying flavors and aftertaste durations. Each dish invites guests on a stimulating journey that tickles the senses in its own unique way. The wine cellar is stocked with an impressive variety of over 300 different hand-selected AOC wines from the best vineyards. 10 different wine and champagne are kept ready to order by the glass at all times.

Seating is limited to just ten guests at a time to emphasize a private dining experience. The restaurant works well as a venue for a variety of occasions including anniversaries, dates, and entertaining clients. The restaurant has English-speaking staff, so foreign guests need not worry about communicating. The restaurant’s name, “”Aréna,”” evokes images of a sports stadium or stage, or, more broadly, a facing of one another. The decor is white and silver, unadorned with flowers, paintings, or other decorations. The elegant white “”stage”” allows you to focus on the food, the wine, and, most importantly, your companions without distraction.
